Care Homes provide long term care for older people with physical and mental health needs. They are a significant place of death for the older population with approximately 20% of older people over 65 years old dying in such institutions. The provision of palliative care in care homes is currently recognised as an area of development within the hospice and palliative care world.

The recent WHO booklet concerning Better Palliative Care for Older People, has highlighted the priority that palliative care for older people is in the context of an ageing population. More specifically care homes, as places of care for older people are receiving greater attention. For example, in Australia guidelines for providing a palliative care approach in this care setting have been developed.

Recent publications of interest in the United Kingdom include an overview paper by The National Council and educational resources developed by the Open University in collaboration with Macmillan Cancer Relief.
